Some of my Favorite Books on Writing!
One of my favorite things about being a writer is also being a reader. According to my mom, I memorized and “read” Peter Pan to myself at three years old, and that love has never failed me.
Books are the reason I started writing. I wanted to be a part of that world- to have my words read and dissected, change opinions, introduce new ideas, and help someone escape reality for a few precious moments.
Writing and reading go hand-in-hand, and I’ve encountered several books that have helped me strengthen my craft, and I want to share those books with you!
So, in no particular order, here are some of my favorite books that have helped me become the writer you see today!
Writing Is My Drink by Theo Nestor
This book is full of humor, wit, and a down-to-earth look at the life of a writer. Reading it made me laugh while also boosting my confidence and teaching me how to push the boundaries of my writing.
Make a Scene by Jordan E. Rosenfeld
More on the technical side, this book taught me how to craft a scene from beginning to end in ways I’d never thought of before. It also helps with developing characters, plot, setting, and other technical aspects of story writing.
The Well-Fed Writer by Peter Bowerman
This book is more for those looking into the freelance writing gig, and it helped me figure out what kind of writing I wanted to do. It also helps with finding clients, pricing work, and getting your name out into the freelance world!
Your First Novel by Ann Rittenberg and Laura Whitcomb
Everything you need for plotting, structuring, and writing your first novel! It’s full of straightforward, easy-to-digest advice on crafting, marketing, and selling the novel of your dreams!
The Write Stuff Adventures by Dean Rea
My first introduction to writing prompts! I found this book in middle school, and it’s full of writing exercises, creative prompts, and everything a young writer needs to find their style. However, it’s not just for kids! I highly recommend having a copy around to jumpstart the inspiration when needed.
Bonus 1: The Art of Saying No by Damon Zahariades
No is a complete sentence, and this book helped me see that better than anything else. It helped me organize my goals, figure out what I wanted out of life, and set some boundaries that I never knew I needed. It’s truly a life-changing book!
Bonus 2: The Slight Edge by Jeff Olsen
My brother challenged me to read this book, and it was eye-opening! I knew actions had consequences, but I didn’t realize that every teeny-tiny action or decision we make can affect us. In fact, I wrote an article based on this book, and I think it does a better job of explaining the theory of The Slight Edge than a single paragraph.
That’s my list! I may add more as I find them, but, for now, these are the ones that have helped me become a better reader, a better writer, and a more confident person overall.
Have you read any of the books on my list? Which books would you add? Tell me in the comments below!
